General FAQ (all programs)

Who is my employer when teaching online?

All teachers who work with us are considered independent contractors. Our online teaching programs are run jointly between The Overseas Teacher and our partners in China (First Leap & DaDa ABC). We work within the United Kingdom to give you real-time support, training and payroll with our UK based staff. Our Chinese Partners provides the students and the software platform. Our joint programs provide increased stability and broaden this opportunity to allow teachers who are less experienced with online platforms, and those teachers without TEFL certificates or university degrees, to participate in online teaching. Working with this program rather than the Chinese Partners directly will not effect your earning potential.

How are students allocated to me?

Students choose the times that they are available, just as you will do. When they choose their desired class times, they will be able to see all available teachers’ profiles and choose from among them. This is why it is critically important that your video, picture and bio all give a great impression of you.

What are the maximum working hours?

There is no maximum number of working hours. You are able to work every available hour in the platform.

Where will my classes take place?

All classes will be conducted via a specially built proprietary platform that allows for the use of classroom tools, the ability for you and your student to see both each-other as well as the curriculum and to organize your classes and schedule.

How many students are in a class and what are their ages?

Class sizes vary, they can be 1-1 or in groups of potentially 10 pupils. Students can be as young as 4 and as old as 16, however the majority of students are between the ages of 8 and 12.

Do I keep the same students over time?

Typically students will stay with their teacher so long as you do not change your schedule. Students may choose change their teacher but teachers may not choose their students.

Is there a break between back to back classes?

Both online teaching programs have breaks between classes. DaDa ABC has 2 minutes in between classes whereas First Leap has 10 minute breaks. It is often recommended that if you are working for a large block of time each day that you schedule a break for yourself within your schedule for 30 minutes.
